From Japan with love

Hi, my name is Lily Barraclough, I’m a Year 13 student and have been studying Japanese at AGGS for roughly 4 years now. Learning Japanese has been an extremely rewarding experience and helped me to achieve my dream of travelling to Japan in the December of 2018.

As the plane descended on Narita International Airport, my heart skipped a beat in excitement and suspense at having finally arriving in the Land of the Rising Sun. Looking down at Tokyo, I was half-expecting to see a giant Godzilla rise up from the murky waters of Tokyo Bay, just like in the movies. Luckily, my worst fears were never actualised and as the sun set, casting the cloud cover in bright crimson colour, far in the distance I could spot one of the many familiar symbols of Japan: Great Mount Fuji loomed above the fluffy clouds, kindly welcoming us.

FIRST FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

On Tuesday 12 February in the Auckland Town Hall 4 of our Year 13 Students were awarded a First Foundation Scholarship.   Nathahlia Payne , Isabella Van Stipriaan-Huik,Harleen Rangi Singh and Nellina Vaovasa

Latisha Ah-Chee who was a Year 13 student last year was also awarded a scholarship funded by Barfoot and Thompson. Latisha is studying Property and Law at the University of Auckland.

All students receive $12,000 to go towards their tertiary studies, a mentor for 4 years and support

2019 Prefects Camp

Congratulations to our Head Girl for 2019, Isabella Van Stipriaan-Huik; our four Deputy Head Girls; Claudia Bramley, Gwyneth Parallag, Harleen Rangi Singh and Kaua Veainu and our 17 prefects, who together are our Student Leaders for 2019.  

On 22 and 23 January all 21 girls attended a Prefects Camp at the AUT Marae.  During the two day camp the girls worked on their leadership and public speaking skills and conflict resolution strategies.  They also talked about the importance of resilience and spent time planning for the year ahead.  Yoga and zumba sessions provided fun and exercise.  We are looking forward to a great year ahead!

Congratulations to all our Prizewinners who made us so proud on Friday 2 November at our Annual Senior Prizegiving.
Congratulations to our Dux, Casey Leupolu and to our Proxime Accessit to the Dux, Laura Taylor both of whom have already achieved NCEA Level 3 endorsed with Excellence.  The award of Dux is the highest award in any secondary school. 
A great big thank you to the tertiary institutes, the companies, the Old Girls' Trust, the Old Girls' Association, The Cotter Trust, the Louise Gardner Trust and to all of the wonderful friends of our school, who collectively made it possible for us to award over $300,000 in scholarships and grants.
The main scholarships awarded to our students included:
